I have a 14 year old female cousin who I let look after my baby. Then I have a 14 year old nephew who my brother does NOT allow look after my nieces. He is not focused enough, whereas my cousin is like a little Mother. Is it a gender thing? So interesting!

Leah - yes, every situation is different. My children are so young, I'm not at this stage yet - other than older cousins that can help out, but don't babysit alone yet.

Many 13-year-olds are ready for the responsibility, but some can handle it at 12 and some not until 15 or 16. If the older sibling shows responsible characteristics, such as doing chores and homework without being asked, understanding limits and able to control emotions, they are probably ready. Some will want the added responsibility (another readiness sign) and others will not (which is a clear indication they are not ready for it).
